Industrial Wireless

Wireless communications offer flexibility and cost reduction, and will promisingly replace cables in a factory in the near future. To realize such industrial wireless networks, radio communications with hundreds of nodes must be reliably completed in real-time, i.e., within a few milliseconds. To this end, we are working on two approaches. Firstly, we are studying preamble shortening in OFDM systems with short payloads to reduce uninformative long preambles’ transmission time. By taking advantage of the short and frequent transmission in WCS, we have designed subcarrier selectable short preambles and exploited inter-packet correlation for channel estimation. Even with the shortened preambles, our proposed scheme can maintain reliable communication in most channel conditions and improve the real-time capability. Secondly, we are working on concurrent transmission based distributed antenna systems, which do not require time-consuming transmit cooperation among a massive number of transmitters. Each transmitter only transmits an identical signal simultaneously to improve reliability thanks to spatial diversity. The simulations demonstrate the potential abilities to realize the industrial wireless systems.
